What is The Director’s Lens?

It’s 11:30am on a hot Monday in July. I am sitting at my desk struggling to figure out where to begin with everything that is starting up a WordPress Blog and yet I can’t help but feel a tremendous thrill of excitement. I’ve been at this for three hours now and it has felt like mere seconds. I have no idea what I’m doing, but the start of such a endeavor that is creative, studious, not to mention hard and daunting, has provided a level of excitement that has escaped me for far too long.

Welcome to The Director’s Lens a film blog that will take you through my personal journey of all things cinema. I consider this site my public journal and playful sandbox that will document my attempt to enter the world of film analysis and criticism. Once upon a time I sat in an empty dollar theater with a journal and pen in my lap thinking one day perhaps I’d be a film critic. I won’t dare share what movie I had chosen to give this idea a try with, but that day was one of many solo trips to the movie theater that I adored and cherished, so much so that I dreamt one day I would write about what I was seeing on screen to share with the world. The Director’s Lens is a 40-year old’s second life at chasing that dream. I intend to document everything from the movies I’ve seen to my study of film history and analysis with the hope my skills build and improve over time so that perhaps I write my way into personal growth (as both a cinephile and writer) and just maybe something far greater that achieves my dream.

I started today ordering three books to aid my journey and will be utilizing these tools to build up my writing repertoire in analysis, criticism and understanding of all things film. These include: Film Art: An Introduction by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson, How to Read a Film: The Art, Technology, Language, History, and Theory of Film and Media by James Monaco and A Short Guide to Writing about Film by Timothy Corrigan. You can consider this my Film Studies curriculum and with each chapter I hope to transfer my learnings into the upcoming posts you will soon see on this site.

I couldn’t be more thrilled to take this first step, see you at the movies!
